If you’re looking for an outback escape that feels like a warm hug, Little Roper Stock Camp in Mataranka, NT, is your go-to. This gem of a campsite is more than just a place to set up camp - it’s an experience. From mornings with fresh damper (aka Johnny cakes) and billy tea to afternoons spent meeting the camp’s adorable animals, and by night sitting around the fire listening to authentic campfire stories, and we were lucky enough to hear some events from the netflix series, Last Stop Larrimah - real stories not on TV! This place is a real slice of the Northern Territory you won’t want to miss - trust us!

  • From Darwin: A manageable 4-hour drive (around 420 km).
  • From Katherine: Just 1 hour by car (around 100 km).

Little Roper Stock Camp is conveniently located near the Stuart Highway, making it an easy stop for road-tripping families exploring the Top End.

Bush Charm

Start your mornings with damper and stories from the friendly hosts. The traditional Aussie vibe is alive and well here.

The kids will gravitate to the camps simple hay bale play ground, this was a true 80's vibe and made our heart full, remember those days before ipads! Ours girls opted to play with kids instead of have any technology, they would only resurface when they got hungry or as it got dark.

Kids will love feeding cows, pigs, and chooks along with morning reptile handling - big snakes. it’s the ultimate farm vibe that brings smiles all around.

Close to Mataranka Thermal Pools

A refreshing dip in the Mataranka Thermal Pools is just a short drive away, making it the perfect way to cool off after a warm day.


Nearby Adventures

  • Bitter Springs: Float down a serene, spring-fed thermal creek surrounded by lush palms. It’s less crowded than Mataranka and feels like your own little paradise.
  • Elsey National Park: Enjoy scenic walking trails and peaceful fishing spots, but remember to stay croc-wise when casting a line in the NT!
  • Cutta Cutta Caves: A fascinating limestone cave system just down the road, perfect for curious little explorers.

  3. Book longer a night is not enough! We ended up staying 5.
